Getting a Business Phone Listing

If you call 411 and ask for your own business, there is a good chance the operator will not find you. That surprises most owners. The reason is that there is no single 411 directory anymore. Deregulation left us with thousands of directory assistance providers, run by landline carriers, cell carriers, cable companies, and VoIP providers. Each one keeps its own data, and none of them has your number unless someone gave it to them.

Two reasons this is worth fixing:

Customers still dial 411. Not many, but the ones who do are often older, driving, or somewhere with no usable data signal. They are trying to reach a business like yours right now.

Lenders and vendors check it. A 411 listing has become an informal credit reference. When a supplier or a lender wants to confirm a small business is real, directory assistance is one of the places they look. No listing can quietly work against you.

Here is how to get listed.

1. List Yourself (free)

Go to listyourself.net. A basic individual listing is free. You fill in your business name, address, and phone number, then answer an automated verification call at that number to confirm it is yours. The listing propagates to directory assistance databases over the following days.

Their paid tiers cover regional and national coverage and are priced per locality. Verify current pricing on their site before committing, since it changes.

2. Google Business Profile (free)

Claim your listing at business.google.com. This is not a 411 directory, but it feeds what most people actually use when they are looking for a business, and it is the single highest-value listing you can have. If you only do one thing on this page, do this one.

3. Ask your own phone carrier

If your number comes from a traditional landline carrier, ask them to publish a business directory listing. Some do it as part of the service. Some charge. If you are on VoIP, your provider may or may not submit listings to the aggregators, so ask directly rather than assuming.

4. Call your local 411 and ask

Dial 411, ask for your business, and when they tell you there is no listing, say you are the owner and ask how to get added. Sometimes this works and costs nothing. Sometimes they will point you to whoever handles listings in your area.

What to skip

Printed white pages listings are no longer worth chasing for most businesses. Neither are the directory sites that charge setup fees for placement nobody sees. If a service wants real money up front to “submit you everywhere,” it is almost certainly reselling something you can do yourself for free above.

Want us to handle it?

We publish 411 directory information for our phone service customers as part of setting up their numbers. If you are looking at a new business phone system, or you are unhappy with the one you have, we can take this off your list along with everything else.
